Warm Hoodies and Joggers for Winter: What to Look For

The warmest hoodies and joggers for winter use heavyweight fleece, usually 300 gsm or more, with a soft fleece interior that traps heat close to your body. Fit matters almost as much as fabric. A relaxed hoodie leaves room for a layer underneath, and joggers with ribbed cuffs keep cold air from running up your legs. This guide covers what to check before you buy and how to wear and wash a set so it lasts through the season.

What makes a hoodie warm?

Fabric weight does most of the work. Brands measure it in grams per square meter, or gsm. A light hoodie sits somewhere around 250 gsm or under, and it works well for spring nights. Most brands call a hoodie heavyweight once it reaches about 300 gsm. At that weight the fabric blocks wind better, holds heat longer and keeps its shape when you pull it on every day.

The inside of the fabric matters too. Fleece has a soft, raised interior that holds a thin layer of warm air against your skin. That layer keeps you comfortable on a cold walk and stops the chill from setting in the moment you step outside.

Then look at the blend. Pure cotton feels soft and breathes well. A cotton and polyester blend holds its shape and color through more washes and shrinks less. Many of the best winter hoodies use a blend for that reason.

Is a heavyweight hoodie worth it?

If you live somewhere with a real winter, a heavyweight hoodie earns its price. You'll wear it more days of the year. It works as an outer layer on a mild fall afternoon and as a mid layer under a coat in January.

A heavy hoodie also wears better over time. Thin fleece tends to pill and stretch out at the cuffs sooner. Heavier fabric holds its structure, so the hood keeps its shape and the hem keeps sitting where it should.

Should a winter hoodie fit oversized?

An oversized fit makes the most sense for winter. A dropped shoulder and a roomy body give you space to wear a tee or a long sleeve underneath without the hoodie pulling tight across your back. The extra room also traps more warm air.

If you prefer a cleaner silhouette, size down one size in an oversized cut. You'll keep the relaxed shoulder and lose some of the length and width.

Joggers or sweatpants for winter?

Joggers have a tapered leg and ribbed cuffs at the ankle. Sweatpants usually have a straight or open hem. For winter, joggers win on warmth. The cuffs close the gap at your ankle, keep the hem off wet sidewalks and sit cleanly over a pair of sneakers or boots.

Look for the same heavyweight fleece you'd want in a hoodie. An elastic waistband with a drawstring lets you adjust the fit, and room through the leg keeps the joggers comfortable when you sit, drive or stretch.

Why buy a hoodie and jogger set?

A matching hoodie and jogger set takes the guesswork out of getting dressed on a cold morning. Both pieces share the same fabric and coordinated colors, so the outfit looks put together even when you pulled it on in thirty seconds. You can also split the set and wear each piece with the rest of your closet. The hoodie works over jeans, and the joggers work under a plain tee or a jacket.

How do you layer hoodies and joggers for cold weather?

Start with a cotton tee or a long sleeve against your skin. Add the hoodie as your mid layer. On the coldest days, put a coat or a puffer vest over the top. An oversized hoodie fits under most open-front jackets, and the hood sits outside the collar to block wind from your neck.

For your legs, joggers alone work for most winter days in town. If you'll spend hours outside, a thin base layer underneath adds warmth without much bulk. Finish with socks that cover your ankle so the cuff sits over them.

Shop it in White, Blue, Purple, Brown or Black.

The Ranked Heavyweight Joggers ($60) use heavyweight fleece in the same blend. They have an elastic waistband with a drawstring and ribbed cuffs, and the Snake sits on the front thigh. They fit true to size with room through the leg.

Shop them in White, Blue, Purple, Brown or Black.

Both pieces come in unisex sizes S through XL, and each product page has its own size guide. Wear them together as a full set for $115, or pair a Black hoodie with Brown joggers for a two-tone look. The first run is open for preorder until Nov 15. During preorder, the hoodie is $55, the joggers are $50 and the full set is $100, and every preorder delivers by Dec 15. After preorder closes, Ranked pieces arrive in 13–20 business days, so order early if you're buying for the holidays.

How do you wash a hoodie so it stays soft?

Turn the hoodie and joggers inside out and wash them cold with similar colors. Tumble dry on low or hang them to dry, and skip the bleach. High heat shrinks fleece and flattens the soft interior, so the low setting matters more than any detergent you choose.

Skip fabric softener as well. It coats the fibers and can make fleece feel slick over time. Wash your set when it needs it instead of after every wear, and it will stay soft through many winters.

Pick the set you'll reach for

The best winter set is the one you grab first on a cold morning. Choose heavy fabric, a fit with room to layer and a color you'll want to wear all season.
