Wrestling T-Shirts: What to Wear to Practice and Beyond
A good wrestling t-shirt is heavy cotton that survives practice-room laundry, fits close enough for warm-ups, and carries a design that wrestlers recognize. If you split your week between wrestling and BJJ, the same shirt should work in both rooms. This guide covers what to look for and why the throw belongs on the back of your shirt.
What do wrestlers wear to practice?
Wrestlers compete in a singlet, but most practice in a t-shirt and shorts or a fitted compression top. The t-shirt does the most work. You wear it to warm up, to drill, to run stairs, and on the walk out of the room.

Practice shirts take a beating. They get grabbed, sweated through and washed after every session. A thin shirt stretches out by the middle of the season, so weight and fabric matter.
What makes a good wrestling t-shirt?
Look for three things.
- Heavy cotton. A heavier cotton tee holds its shape through grips, hot rooms and a full season of washes.
- A close fit. Loose fabric catches fingers during hand fighting. Pick your true size so the shirt stays out of the way without riding up.
- A design you'd wear outside the room. The best wrestling shirts carry something only a grappler would understand, so the shirt still means something when you wear it to class or to the store.
Can you wear a wrestling t-shirt to BJJ?
Yes. Gi students can wear a cotton tee under the jacket, and many no-gi grapplers wear a t-shirt over their rashguard to warm up. For live no-gi rounds, most gyms want a rashguard, so check with your coach before you roll in a tee.
Why do wrestlers and BJJ players wear the same gear?
Both sports start on the feet and finish on the mat. Plenty of BJJ gyms teach wrestling for takedowns, and plenty of wrestlers pick up jiu-jitsu after their competitive season ends. The shirt that fits one room usually fits the other.
The Apply the Pressure Tee
The Apply the Pressure Tee ($20) keeps the front clean and puts a fighter mid-throw across the back, the moment control turns into execution. It's made from heavy, 100% cotton and comes in XS through XL.
Wrestlers know that moment, when the hand fight opens an angle and you commit to the shot. The tee puts it where your teammates see it when you walk off the mat.
Pressure is a privilege, so put it on.
