How to Style Joggers: Everyday Outfits That Work

To style joggers, keep the top simple and let the fit do the work. Pair them with a plain or graphic tee, an oversized hoodie or a jacket, and finish with clean sneakers that sit right under the cuff. Joggers look best when they fit through the leg without bagging at the ankle. Below you'll find outfits for most days of the week, plus what to check on fit, shoes and color.

How should joggers fit?

Start here, because fit decides whether joggers look intentional or sloppy. The waistband should sit at your natural waist without a belt. The leg should have room through the thigh and taper toward the ankle. The cuff should land at or just above your ankle bone, with a little stack of fabric above it.

If the cuff sits halfway down your foot, the joggers run too long. If the fabric pulls tight across your thighs when you sit, size up. Heavier fabric drapes better than thin fabric, so a heavyweight jogger tends to hang cleanly instead of clinging.

What do you wear with joggers?

A tee is the easiest place to start. A fitted or regular tee keeps the outfit balanced, since the joggers already give you volume through the leg. A heavy cotton tee holds its shape better than a thin one and looks sharper with the relaxed fabric below it.

If you like an oversized tee, keep the joggers a little closer through the leg. Volume on top and volume on the bottom can work, but it reads best when the colors stay simple and the shoes look clean.

Graphic tees work well with joggers. Let the graphic be the one loud piece in the outfit and keep everything else quiet.

Can you wear a hoodie with joggers?

You can, and it's one of the most comfortable outfits you'll own. The key is proportion. An oversized hoodie with a dropped shoulder pairs well with joggers that taper at the ankle, because the narrow cuff balances the wide top. Let the hoodie hem fall at or just below your hip.

On colder days, put a jacket over the hoodie and let the hood sit outside the collar. A denim jacket, a bomber or a long coat all work. The joggers keep the outfit relaxed, and the jacket gives it structure.

What shoes go with joggers?

Clean sneakers are the default. Low-top leather or canvas sneakers in white, black or a neutral tone go with almost every pair of joggers. Running shoes and trainers also work, especially with athletic or heavyweight joggers.

High-top sneakers and boots work when the cuff sits right at the top of the shoe. Pull the cuff up slightly so it rests above the shoe instead of bunching over it. Slides work for a quick errand or a lazy Sunday, preferably with socks that match your joggers or your top.

Keep your shoes clean. Joggers show off your footwear more than straight-leg pants do, so a scuffed pair stands out.

How do you dress joggers up?

Swap the hoodie for a structured layer. A crewneck sweater, a button-up shirt worn open over a tee or a wool overcoat all push joggers toward a sharper look. Choose joggers in a dark solid color like black or brown, and pick leather sneakers or simple boots.

The fabric matters here too. Heavyweight joggers with a clean front and minimal branding read as more polished than thin, shiny athletic pants.

Should your hoodie and joggers match?

A matching hoodie and jogger set is the simplest outfit in your closet. One color from shoulder to ankle looks deliberate, and it can make you look taller. Wear it with clean sneakers and a cap and you're ready in under a minute.

You can also split a set. Wear a darker jogger with a lighter hoodie, or the reverse, to create a two-tone look. Neutrals pair the most easily. Black, white and brown work with nearly everything, and a blue or purple piece adds color without fighting the rest of the outfit.

What colors of joggers are easiest to style?

Black joggers go with everything and hide wear the best. White joggers make a strong statement but show dirt, so save them for days you know you'll stay clean. Brown has become a favorite neutral because it pairs with black, white and denim. Blue and purple work best when the rest of the outfit stays neutral.
